ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

MLADEN HRVANOVIC (*1977, Belgrade).

Artist based in Belgrade, Serbia.

Graduated from the University of Arts – Belgrade, Faculty of Fine Arts, Painting Department and Expanded Media Experimental Class (2006).

Specialized in graphic and industrial design, sculptural and installation work, and research-based intermedia projects in the fields of urban graphic and spatial solutions, public art and open-air architectural constructions. His main reference points in contemporary visual arts have been spatial and political construction-solutions as given by artists such as Rachel Whiteread, Anando Costa, Joshua Davies, Chris Cunningham, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Norman Foster and Tadao Ando.

His main activity stems from the new media practices and cybernetic realities, and questions the ways through which artists position themselves in-between the self-organized/self-managed structures and those pertaining to larger organizational and institutional team-based frameworks. His main professional concern revolves around the issues that put together socially and politically engaged work with a broad range of economic, market oriented issues, within and outside the mainstreams of contemporary aesthetics and culture.

His recent projects (RE-MAPPING, Belgrade, Serbia; PLUG IN PLAY, Bergum/Switzerland; DER BERG, Berlin/Germany; DEVICE ART, Belgrade/Serbia; PARASITE, Ohrid/Macedonia); HOME SWET HOME Belgrade / Serbia, have been realized in cooperation with international teams of artists, curators, critics, designers, economists, scientists, architects and urban-planners (among which, Nicholas Haningghen/EXIST, Strasbourg/France; EASA-European Association of Architecture Students; SYBASE-Business Software Developments, Paris/ France; FRIKOM DesignTeam, Belgrade/Serbia; etc.).

His current project (DIRECT TRANSFER, Belgrade/Serbia) is a critical reflection on the actual state of political, cultural and economic transition of a post-socialist society without solution. By means of sculptural freight, aimed at cross-border circulation and the possibility of bestowing, the project centers on various sets of obstacles and critical solutions in order to accelerate the democratic process of transition and overcome the gap between the opposing political systems, while proposing a collaborative educational and research-oriented working platform, both locally and internationally, to various professionals and protagonists of a common social spectrum.
